New website for legal migration
The government has launched a new website aimed at offering guidance on working legally in the UK.
Visitors to the "Working in the UK" site can access advice and information about their legal status and the schemes and placements available to them, and can download the relevant application forms online.
The move comes as the government attempts to stem the tide of illegal immigrants by adopting a policy of managed migration.
"Migrants make a significant contribution to the UK - they account for only eight per cent of the population but contribute 10 per cent of GDP," said Home Office minister Beverley Hughes.
"It is in all our interests to harness the innovation, skills and productivity that new migrants can bring.
"The new Working in the UK website will help those who want to come and work here legally, as well as the employers who need them to fill jobs.
"As a key player in the global economy, we cannot afford to be anti-immigration, but we need a balanced approach - welcoming those who want to come here legally and contribute but cracking down on those who try to come illegally or try to abuse our asylum system.
"The government will continue to encourage properly-managed legal migration, whilst ensuring robust border controls and continuing to increase action to tackle illegal working."
