MPs demand sitting hours review

Peter Hain is under intense pressure to hold an "urgent review" of the new Commons sitting hours.

Over 200 MPs from across the House have signed an early day motion, tabled by former minister George Howarth, demanding an opportunity to scrap morning sittings.

"Currently there simply are not enough hours to do the work the Commons needs to do," said Howarth. "I am hoping that by the end of next week we will have 250 MPs signed up."

"I know some ministers are pushing behind the scenes. At that point, with 250, it will be difficult to resist having a review."

Introduced by Robin Cook after a knife-edge Commons vote, the new hours have come under heavy fire since their introduction.

Many MPs say they are unable to meet their commitments to committee work, constituents and other meetings.

They also warn that attendance in the chamber has fallen since the early sittings were introduced.

The early day motion has been signed by 218 MPs who believe the Commons leader should bring forward a review initially scheduled for the end of this parliament.

Those who support a rethink on the reforms include senior Labour MPs John McFall and Keith Vaz and prominent Conservatives including Peter Lilley and Ann Widdecombe.

The motion reads:

"This House notes that the revised sitting hours and related arrangements have now been in place for 12 months; believes that there is now sufficient experience of the new arrangements to enable the House to judge what adjustments would be appropriate to enable the business of the House to be conducted more effectively; and calls for an urgent review of the reforms."
