Animal welfare review begins

Ministers have launched a review of animal welfare and the livestock industry.

Defra launched a consultation on Friday over its new the Animal Health and Welfare Strategy Implementation Plan for England.

The plan is part of the department's new measures to prevent a repeat of the foot and mouth outbreak of 2001.

The department is hoping that feedback from the livestock industry and the veterinary profession will help further develop its 10-year plan.

Key issues include animal by-products, illegal imports, quarantine, the Pet Travel Scheme, livestock identification and animal welfare.

Animal health and welfare minister Ben Bradshaw said: "This implementation plan is a first step in turning the principles of the strategy into action we need to take to improve animal health and welfare in this country over the next decade.""Good progress is being made in many areas - and that is reflected in this consultation document - but more needs to be done before we launch the strategy next year," he added.
