Tube workers set for strikes over safety

Tube workers are set to hold a series of strikes in the run up to Christmas over safety.

Officials at the RMT union will announce the results of the strike ballot later today

But they warn Tube workers are to back their recommendation to strike over the safety procedures introduced by the private firms now running parts of the underground.

Action could include speed restrictions being introduced on sections of the underground or staff walkouts.

The union wants a return to daily track inspections and maintenance being carried out by London Underground staff.

Concern has been heightened by several derailments this year and the revelation that some parts of the network are suffering from cracked tracks.
