The British film industry has contributed nearly £1.4 billion to the economy, figures have shown.
According to a report published on Thursday by the UK Film Council, nearly 1,000 firms work in the sector, specialising in post-production.
The production of the technical aspects of films such as Harry Potter and Tomb Raider generated 15,000 jobs, it was found.
Post-production accounts for a quarter of film budgets, increased from 13 per cent two years ago.
"The UK has a wealth of creative and technical talent and it is important that we make the most of it," said Steve Norris, a British film commissioner and member of the Film Council.
"The post-production sector in the UK has a world-renowned reputation and this report points the way to ensuring we build on our current success in the future."
Companies in the area of post-production now propose to create an industry body to represent their interests.
"The British film industry can be proud of its cutting edge post-production sector," said arts minister Estelle Morris.
"This report gives the sector the recognition it so richly deserves.
"I look forward to working closely with the new trade body to help the sector develop and grow."
