Duncan Smith and the words that say it all

Tax is the biggest focus for Iain Duncan Smith, according to his speech.

Analysis of his speech to the party faithful in Blackpool on Thursday found tax mentioned 43 times.

There was a wider appeal beyond the conference with 35 references to people and Britain came up 25 times.

Government was his third priority with 33 references, more than once every two minutes.

And Tony Blair is another major preoccupation for the Conservative leader; the prime minister got 31 references along with one to Downing Street.

There was even a reference to the prime minister's Third Way.

Charles Kennedy was mentioned once by name but the Liberal Democrats came up four times in his oratory.

His "leadership" has been under scrutiny for the entire run of the conference but Duncan Smith only raised the word twice.

There were just two references to "unity" but no mentions of "plots".

Michael Howard's name was raised twice and party chairman Theresa May got support with a mention. And Michael Ancram also made it into the script.

He was determined to show that he is a man on a "mission"; that word came up five times.Policy merited two mentions in the entire speech; this was more of a bid to rouse the troops.

And the "general election" that he wants them to fight is still a long way off in his thinking - it too was only included twice.
