Postal workers vote for further strike action

Postal workers in London are set to stage a one-day walkout, it has been announced.

The Communication Workers Union revealed on Wednesday that its members in the Capital will stage a 24-hour strike on October 16.

Royal Mail workers are protesting over London weighting allowances. The October action will coincide with a strike by local authority workers over pay, although the two events are not linked.

"We have chosen the same day as the council workers' strike to raise the issue of low pay across the public sector," CWU deputy general secretary Dave Ward said.

Last week a 24 hour CWU strike cost the Royal Mail an estimated £10 million after it took five days to clear the backlog.

The employers have said they will not meet the union's demand for a £4,000 salary top up and that industrial action will only lead to further financial pressure on the organisation.
