The government's e-envoy has announced he is to stand down.
Andrew Pinder has been at the Cabinet Office since 2001, where he has led the drive for all government services to be available online by 2005.
He will depart when his contract runs out in 2004, leaving the future of his role in doubt.
"The government is focused on driving forward it's e-agenda," said a Cabinet Office spokeswoman.
"We will consider how best to continue this drive when Andrew Pinder's contract comes to an end."
However, there is speculation that the role of e-envoy could form part of the review into overall government communications.
Although the full report is not expected until the end of the year, interim recommendations include the appointment of a permanent secretary for this area, who would also be responsible for "strategic planning and development", including improved resources for government websites.
