Saudi travel warnings renewed

The Foreign Office has renewed its warnings against people travelling to Saudi Arabia.

The move follows the decision by British Airways to suspend all flights to Saudi Arabia after warnings from the Saudi government of a "serious terrorist threat" to UK aircraft.

Adel al-Jubeir, foreign policy adviser for Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah, revealed to CNN that raids on suspected al Qaeda terrorists had uncovered plans to target a British Airways plane.

American security officials also highlighted "security shortcomings" at Riyadh airport which were being investigated.

A Department for Transport spokesman said: "There is credible intelligence of a serious threat to UK aviation interests in Saudi Arabia."

Officials at the Foreign Office said the danger to Britons in Saudi Arabia remained high and had altered advice to travellers following BA's announcement.

The country has remained on the Foreign Office danger list since the bomb attacks on residential compounds in May which killed more than 30 people, including two Britons.

"We advise British nationals against all but essential travel to Saudi Arabia. If you choose to travel to, or remain in, Saudi Arabia you should take all necessary steps to protect your safety and should make sure you have confidence in your individual security arrangements," said a spokesman.

"You should maintain a high level of vigilance, particularly in public places frequented by foreigners such as hotels, restaurants and shopping malls. You should adopt a low profile."
