Sinn Fein demands action on human rights

Sinn Fein has called on the government to implement the Good Friday agreement in full.

A delegation of republican representatives told Northern Ireland minister John Spellar that urgent action must be taken to tackle their concerns.

Sinn Fein has expressed mounting anger at what it views as discrimination against nationalists in a variety of areas.

Bairbre de Brun, the party's spokesman on equality issues, wants "core mechanisms" established to advance and protect human rights.

"We will stress to John Spellar that his government must take decisive action to ensure that public confidence in the human rights commission, as a key mechanism arising from the Good Friday agreement is restored," she said ahead of the meeting.

"Those most in need of rights expect and deserve to have a human rights commission that will stridently champion their rights in a wholly independent manner.

"The equality agenda is being slowed down and frustrated on many levels. The British government must send out the signal that discrimination will not be tolerated and will be tackled vigorously."
