Hunting Bill heading to Lords
The government is preparing to face down its critics in the House of Lords and press ahead with a ban on hunting with hounds.
Legislation on hunting, which has been toughened in committee, will be put to MPs for its remaining stages on Monday June 30, the Commons leader announced on Thursday.
Peter Hain said the government was committed to introducing the ban and warned the House of Lords not to block the legislation.
"I am sure that the Lords will not wish to frustrate the overwhelming view of the House of Commons," he said.
"The House of Commons has consistently expressed its position and is about to do so again.
"This was a manifesto commitment by the Labour Party being carried into legislation as our government has consistently done with all our manifesto promises and I am sure that the Lords will not wish to block a manifesto commitment of this kind."
Hain warned that ministers would be willing to use the Parliament Act to ensure the government gets its way.
