Cook leads calls to renew US links

Robin Cook has led calls by senior EU figures to renew relations with the United States.

The former Commons leader, in his role as president of the Party of European Socialists, called for the European Union to make a concerted effort to repair the damage caused by the row over Iraq.

Cook, who resigned from the government over the issue, highlighted the issue in Brussels when he published the group's report into Europe's role in the world.

The detailed action plan was presented to the Berlin Summit of social democrat prime ministers and party leaders last week.

It covers a range of issues including terrorism, organised crime, Europe's military and police as well as the thorny issue of reforming the United Nations.

The 150-page report, drawn up by former Danish prime minister Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, also includes economic and social issues and EU relations with the world's poorest countries.

Its aim is to provide a long-term, coherent strategy to re-shape globalisation through action and reform at EU and world level.

"We want to develop international links and organisations so that the world can be safer and better. We can only achieve that only when we strengthen the awareness of the United Nations - for the UN can only be as strong as its member states make it," said the group.
