SNP seeks deal on constructive politics

The leader of the Scottish Nationalists has pledged to give a "fair wind" to proposals put forward by rival political parties.

But in return there should be an end to spin and gimmicks, John Swinney said on Tuesday.

Making his first major speech since the May 1 elections, Swinney sought to address public disillusionment that saw turnout falling in the recent round of elections.

The Holyrood parliament should be made more relevant and focus on delivering the people's priorities, he argued.

With the SNP losing seats while the Greens and Scottish Socialists gained MSPs, Swinney told the minority parties in the parliament that "where there is merit in your arguments, we will listen to them".

He also offered a "new chance" to Labour and the Liberal Democrats.

"Set aside the constant spin and media manipulation and set course on making our parliament the centre of political life. In return, you will be given a fair wind to implement your agenda," he said.

"Parliament must address the public's concerns and demonstrate how it can make a difference. I intend the SNP to play our part in making that difference and ensuring the people have a parliament that can be held in the highest regard."
