Trend to pay back £90,000
A Conservative MP has agreed to repay more than £90,000 in fees he should not have claimed.
Former deputy chairman of the Conservative Party Michael Trend agreed on the eve the Commons Christmas break to pay back £90,277 and made a full apology to parliament's authorities.
Trend had claimed the allowance of up to £19,722-a-year which is paid to MPs who need accommodation in London during the week despite living at his Windsor home.
He issued the statement following the revelation in newspapers last weekend.
The MP for Windsor wrote to the head of the Commons fees office saying it was due to a misunderstanding.
"I am now clear that I had a misunderstanding, honestly and genuinely held, about the terms of the additional costs allowance," he said."As a result, I made claims on my Windsor residence which I now realise fall outside those terms. I very much regret this happened and I would like to offer my apologies to the House."
