Audit watchdog job sparks cronyism row

| Raynsford: defending decision |
The opposition has accused the government of cronyism after it was announced that the husband of a minister has been appointed to head-up the Audit Commission.
Local government minister Nick Raynsford announced that James Strachan - who is married to the Labour peer and government minister Baroness Blackstone - is to become chairman of the powerful spending watchdog.
Raynsford said he had "great confidence" in Strachan's ability to lead the Audit Commission saying he "will bring substantial and diverse experience".
He defended the appointment, stressing that the decision was taken by an independent body in line with the rules laid down by Lord Nolan.
"His appointment has been made following public advertisement and an independent and robust recruitment process undertaken in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments' Code of Practice. It also follows widespread consultation with relevant bodies," said Raynsford.
The Tories have criticised the appointment - saying it is "singularly inappropriate".
Strachan, who is currently the head of the National Institute of the Deaf, takes up the £81,000-a-year post with immediate effect.
