Tory leader builds bridges with backbench critics

Iain Duncan Smith has made minor changes to his front bench team.

Alistair Burt, who served as minister under John Major, becomes PPS to the Conservative leader, where it is thought he will be charged with building bridges between Central Office and backbench MPs.

"I am also pleased that Alistair Burt will be joining me in the Leader's Office. He has years of ministerial experience and his appointment will improve communication amongst all colleagues," Duncan Smith said.

New boy Mark Prisk joins the frontbench for the first time as shadow financial secretary where he replaces the europhile James Clappison, who has decided to quit the opposition team.

Following Oliver Heald's promotion to the shadow cabinet, Chris Grayling moves to the shadow health team from the whips' office.

John Baron also joins the frontbench for the first time.

Julian Lewis, a euro-sceptic military historian, moves from the whips' office to the shadow defence team.

Another Tory newboy, Hugh Robertson, joins the opposition whips' office.
