MEPs debate fishing crisis

MEPs are set to debate tough European measures to tackle the crisis facing the fishing industry.

The European parliament will meet on Monday in Strasbourg to consider a report into the commission's proposals to reform the Common Fisheries Policy.

The plans in their current form represent a radical overhaul with the most controversial aspect including switching subsidies from ship renewal to fund the scrapping of vessels.

Brussels argues there are currently too many ships chasing falling fish stocks.

Neil Parish MEP said the overhaul would have a massive impact on the UK's fleet.

"The future of Europe's fish stocks and Britain's fishing fleet hangs in the balance. It is essential that a sensible and practical approach to fish conservation is taken to prevent damaging the tens of thousands of British jobs that depend on this vital industry," he said.
