Post union calls for watchdog's sacking

Plans by the postal regulator to modernise the Royal Mail have brought union calls for him to be sacked.

The head of the post workers union will on Monday call for the head of Postcomm Graham Corbett to be sacked by the government after announcing controversial plans which the union claims could spark further job loses.

The regulator announced a one pence rise in the price of stamps and compensation for lost or damaged mail.

Billy Hayes, general secretary of the Communication Workers Union will make his call for Corbett to be sacked at a fringe meeting of the Conservative conference in Bournemouth.

He will argue that the regulator is both undemocratic and has ignored the demands of ministers over the universal service.

Hayes argues that the regulator has focused too heavily on freeing competition and refused to take into account consumer issues.

His union argues that the regulator's three-year price freeze will cost around 10,000 jobs.
