Centre-right Euro politicians have met in Edinburgh for a meeting to develop new thinking on the EU.

Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith and David Trimble of the Ulster Unionists were expected to join 233 MEPs to discuss impending EU enlargement, the single market and the rural economy.

Following the success of the political Right in recent elections around Europe, the three day-conference was organised to encourage new thinking and develop an agenda across a range of issues.

Scottish Tory leader, David McLetchie, used the event to call for a greater European role.

"Scotland is fiercely aware that its outdated political establishment is swimming against the international tide. We look forward to the day when Scotland plays its full role in the process of change sweeping the continent of Europe," he said.

"Only the Conservative agenda can break the left wing consensus that stifles progress for Scotland in Europe."
