Booth censured over Downing Street meetings

The prime minister's wife, Cherie Booth, is facing renewed criticism after it emerged that she is still holding business meetings with clients at Downing Street.

In the latest issue of The Lawyer magazine, it is claimed that many meetings have been held at the Blair family's residence since the prime minister's wife, a leading human rights QC, moved to Matrix chambers.

The meetings have continued, it is alleged, despite criticism of Booth's use of Downing Street buildings in August 2000 from legal groups and the Conservatives.

A spokesman for Matrix chambers confirmed that the meetings had taken place, but denied any impropriety.

"It's common for barristers to have consultations at home. She, like any other barrister, will sometimes want to have meetings at home, but very rarely," he said.

A Downing Street spokeswoman said that meetings took place, but only in the Blairs' private residence, and not in any state rooms.

"The vast majority of Cherie Booths' meetings with clients are held in chambers," she said.

"If she chooses to hold meetings in her private accommodation that is a matter for her and it is not inappropriate or improper."
