'Think small' call from UK business
British business is calling on Tony Blair to "think small" at a forthcoming European summit on economic reform.
UK small business leaders are publishing their wishlist for next month's EU summit in Barcelona.
Headline demands are better regulation, a stronger voice for small firms in Europe, a single market that works and easier access to finance and secure online trading.
David Lennan, director general of the British Chambers of Commerce, said: "It is vital that EU leaders at Barcelona re-invigorate the economic reform agenda by ensuring that the pledges of Lisbon and Stockholm are finally translated into action".
The BCC, the Federation of Small Businesses, the Forum of Private Business, the Institute of Directors and smallbusiness|Europe are calling on the UK prime minister, Spanish prime minister and EU president-in-office, Jose Maria Aznar, the European Commission and the European parliament, to "think small first" when taking economic policy decisions.
"The combination of the general economic downturn, the introduction of the euro, and the imminent enlargement of the European Union will create risks that will only be managed with a more flexible and integrated market than we have today," said Lennan.
The paper comes two days before an informal European council meeting on small business where the UK will be represented by DTI minister Nigel Griffiths.
