Scotland's new first minister Jack McConnell will this week reshuffle the Scottish executive in a move which could see Wendy Alexander dropped from the Scottish cabinet.

McConnell will reshuffle the pack on Tuesday - with some predicting he will move to curb the powers of Alexander.

The first minister's supporters have warned him that he must remove key allies of Gordon Brown if he is to make his mark.

Whilst it is unlikely that he will sack Alexander, who holds the enterprise and lifelong learning brief, he is expected to diminish her role. Aides surrounding the first minister suggest he will split her portfolio in two as a clear warning that she cannot expect to be at the top table by right.

Alexander is said to have spent the last week involved in frantic attempts to ensure she retains her powerbase - although McConnell's aides have let it be known that the attempt will backfire.

Angus Mackay, the finance minister, is known to be close to Brown and is tipped to be removed. Also facing an uncertain future are Jackie Bailey, the social justice minister, and Sarah Boyack, the transport minister.

Set for promotion is McConnell loyalist Andy Kerr, who is tipped to replace the parliament minister, Tom McCabe.

Mike Watson, who is currently the convener of the finance committee, is expected to join the executive. Labour MSP Frank McAveety is also understood to be set for a return to ministerial office.

As part of the reshuffle, McConnell is expected to establish a new minister with a cross-cutting brief to improve the delivery of public services. During his acceptance speech last week he set much store on delivering improvements in schools and hospitals.

McConnell has also made clear that he wants to give greater importance to the arts and heritage - which could mean that two junior ministers are appointed to the portfolio.
