Labour Muslims back UK war effort

Representatives of Britain's Muslim community have moved to show strong support for Britain's involvement in the war against terror.

Speaking ahead of Tony Blair's speech, one leading Muslim delegate told the Labour conference that the September 11 attacks were not an excuse for increased Islamophobia.

Hanif Rajah, the chairman of the Govan Labour Party and the head of the Pakistan Forum in Scotland, said the coming conflict was not a battle between Islam and the rest of the world.

"No religion teaches people to be terrorists. Terrorism has no faith or colour or creed. Islam teaches that if you kill one, you will not be forgiven."

He warned the media not to stir up racial tensions as the war escalates.

"Choose your words and images with care. Islamophobia, like any irrational hatred, breeds on stereotypes and easy twisting of a complex truth," Rajah said.

His call came amid increased fears that the coming attacks on Afghanistan could result in an escalation in hostility shown to Britain's Muslim Community.
