French call for more refugee camps in tunnel zone

Relations between the British and French goverment are coming under increasing strain after a French cabinet minister called for more refugee camps to be built in areas around the channel tunnel.

The minister, Elisabeth Guigou, said more camps such as Sangatte were needed to cope with the thousands of asylum seekers who are flocking to the area.

Her comments came after the British government let it be known that the Sangatte camp was "not helpful" and was hampering Britain's effort to halt illegal immigration.

Despite British opposition to the camp, Mme Guigou, the labour minister, said the French were planning "several shelters" to house refugees in the area

"We must be able to ensure decent housing conditions for these people who are in our territory," she said.

The home secretary, David Blunkett, is set to meet his opposite number in the French government next week where he will detail Britain's opposition to camps close to the tunnell and ferry terminals.
