Father figure: Gordon Brown

Downing Street is set to see a second new arrival with news that Gordon Brown is to become a father for the first time next year.

A statement was issued on Wednesday that the chancellor's wife Sarah is expecting a baby.

"Sarah and Gordon are delighted that they are expecting a baby, due to be born next February. As you would expect, they are absolutely delighted. Both their families are thrilled with the news," said the statement.

A spokeswoman for Number 10 welcomed the announcement, saying: "The prime minister and Cherie are both delighted for the chancellor and Sarah on their news."

Brown, 50, met Sarah Macaulay, 37, in February 1994 and the couple were married in August last year.

In the statement Downing Street said Sarah Brown, who jointly runs a PR consultancy, will take full maternity leave.
