CBI leader attacks blame culture
The director general of the CBI criticised the rise of a blame culture in the UK which has produced an increasingly litigious society.
In an exclusive interview with ePolitix.com, Digby Jones said the growth of a culture of blame in the UK was being encouraged by employment regulations which lead to a "hunt for cash".
The CBI leader cited employment tribunals as a way where this blame culture has turned increasingly litigious. He said the number of times when an employee happily leaves a company, and then makes a claim for constructive dismissal was increasing.
"Somewhere down the next few weeks, in comes the informal chat that says this is going to cost you a lot of money in fighting it, you'll not get your money back, and waste a lot of time; tell you what - give us a couple of grand and we'll go away. And that is the litigious culture that is being bred in people and it is happening a great deal," he said.
When asked why employment tribunals have created this predatory litigious culture, Jones told ePolitix: "Because employment regulations have led us down that path. And two, the way those regulations have been imposed means that the person on the hunt for cash has nothing to lose."
Jones also said the media could sometimes be responsible for encouraging a blame culture. He said that "you do sometimes see a feeding frenzy in the press to try and find someone to blame for things...I worry that there is a huge growth in this mentality".
