Blair calls for unity with USA
Tony Blair has called on Europe and the US to "stick together" to maintain the military links.
Speaking after the meeting of Nato country leaders, which took place as part of President George W Bush's first visit to Brussels.
As expected Bush's aim of establishing a national missile defence shield and European plans to create a rapid reaction force dominated the agenda.
Bush said his plans were essential "to enhance freedom" in the face of new threats from rogue states or groups.Tony Blair was keen to use the "special relationship" to bridge the divide between the two sides.
"The most important thing is that Europe and America should always stick together," he said. "Of course there will be areas where we need intensive negotiations, like nuclear defence, but the world is a more secure and more stable place if Europe and America are together."
