Labour failing the NHS claim Welsh Lib Dems

Almost two thirds of Welsh people are dissatisfied with the way Labour has handled the NHS, the Welsh Liberal Democrats have claimed.

The figures come from a survey the Welsh Lib Dems undertook of the public's experiences of the NHS.

Questioned on how satisfied they were with the government's handling of the NHS, 6.6 per cent of respondents were very satisfied, 26.6 per cent were fairly satisfied, 34.1 per cent were not very satisfied and 28.1 per cent said they were not at all satisfied.

When asked if they agreed with "the partly privatised NHS proposed by the Conservatives" over 80 per cent said they had no wish to pay, compared to 5.8 per cent who did.

Around a quarter of those responding also said they had been discouraged from having dental check-ups, eye tests or buying prescriptions by the charges levied.

Lib Dem deputy leader in Wales, Lembit Opik, said: "The survey highlights massive shortcomings in the NHS which Labour has failed to address in their four years in power."

Opik attacked the Conservatives for being responsible for the crisis in the NHS and Plaid Cymru for offering only "a vague wish list that it could never deliver".

The Liberal Democrats would provide 1400 doctors, nurses and other health professionals and 590 new hospital beds, said Opik.

"We are honest about how we would pay for these changes. By putting ten pence on the top rate of income tax for people earning more than £100,000 we would raise £550 million for the NHS in Wales over five years," he added.

The Lib Dems delivered 100,000 questionnaires to homes across Wales and received 2013 Freepost returns.

The low response rate was seized upon by Labour which claimed the survey was a "flop", with 98 per cent of households refusing to take part.

A Welsh Labour spokesman said the 2000 responses were "probably the equivalent of the total Lib Dem membership in Wales".

"People in Wales have very little time for Lib Dem gimmicks. They are more interested in voting for the party that will actually deliver the additional resources our health service needs. That party is Labour, as the Lib Dems acknowledge," said the spokesman.

Liberal Democrat summary of the survey findings

80.6 per cent of the respondents in all over Wales do not agree to pay a fee to see their GP, as it would happen in the case of a partly privatised NHS proposed by the Conservatives.

62.2 per cent of the respondents are not (not very and not at all) satisfied with the way in which the Government is handling the NHS.

Only 6.6 per cent is very satisfied with the way in which the Government is handling the NHS.

20.9 per cent of the respondents had waited 1-3 months, 14.07 per cent had waited 4-6 months and almost the same number of people, 14.6 per cent had waited longer than 6 months to see a consultant on the NHS.

34.6 per cent of the respondents found this waiting time not very or not at all reasonable.

25.8 per cent of the respondents have been put off from having a dental check up by the introduction of dental test charges.

75.5 per cent of the respondents said the tobacco advertising should not continue.

27.6 per cent of the respondents have been put off by the introduction of eye test charges.

25.6 per cent of the respondents have been stopped from getting medicine by prescription charges.
