Vote Labour for privatisation, say Plaid

Supporting Labour would be a vote for the privatisation of key public services, Plaid Cymru has claimed.

Plaid attacked Labour's plans for greater private sector involvement in public services and has urged trade unions to oppose them.

The nationalists on Tuesday accused Labour of trying to woo Conservative supporters, even though they were already expected to win the election showing that new Labour believes in extending privatisation, they argued.

Labour has argued that private sector involvement in public services such as education and the NHS could lead to a better service and higher standards.

Leanne Wood, Plaid's Rhondda candidate, called on trade unionists to contribute to the debate on the development of public services.

"I am very concerned that new Labour is actively considering privatising some health and education services," she added.

Plaid's Llanelli PPC, Dyfan Jones, warned the government that they ignored unions at their peril. He accused Labour of moving "further to the right than even the Tories were on certain issues".

Labour hit back by accusing the nationalists of having "no economic policy worthy of the name."

MEP Glenys Kinnock said Labour was securing extra jobs and funding Objective One programmes.

"There are now 40,000 more people in jobs in Wales than when we were elected. If we had promised that in 1997 we would have been laughed at," she Kinnock.

"Of course, the nationalists have no economic policy worthy of the name. They remain nothing more than a party of empty protest. But, as our analysis shows, even their claims about Labour's record are a nonsense," she added.
