Plaid chief calls for royal rethink
Plaid Cymru's leader has called for a streamlined monarchy and a public debate about the role of Prince Charles in a newly devolved Wales.
In an exclusive interview with ePolitix.com, Ieuan Wyn Jones, the president of Plaid Cymru, said he believed the people of Wales were ready for change.
"I think that people want to see that the monarchy should be a modern monarchy, and doesn't actually have the aura of being old-fashioned and stuffy. It should be a slimmed down monarchy with the powers that it has clearly defined and the responsibilities clearly defined and that it accepts that people are citizens and not subjects," he said.
He said it was up to the Welsh people to decide what the future role of the prince should be. "I think that is something we should be having a public debate about. Because the role of the Prince of Wales in a devolved Wales is no longer clear..I think that is an important issue."
Wyn Jones said the party welcomed English people settling in Wales. "It's absolutely wrong to say that we discriminate against anybody. Citizenship isn't based on ethnic background, it is actually where you live and where you make a contribution to society," he said.
He also dismissed as a political ploy the Welsh Labour Party's claims that the Welsh nationalists were anti-English.
"I understand why the Labour Party want to attack us on this because they see their grip on power in Wales being eroded and we are the main challengers to them," he said.
