Former PM John Major used one of his last speeches in the Commons to deliver a blistering attack on Gordon Brown on Monday.

He called the chancellor an "economic masochist" who had put up taxes by more than public spending.

His "sneer and jeer" politics had assaulted Middle England, said Major.
