Scots politicians among Faslane arrests

Three leading Scottish politicians were among more than 200 people arrested by police at the Faslane naval base earlier this week.

Labour MP George Galloway, Scottish Socialist MSP Tommy Sheridan and Green Party MEP Caroline Lucas had joined CND and church protestors on Monday at the base for Britain's Trident nuclear submarines on the Clyde.

It is the second time that Sheridan has been arrested for demonstrating at the base. He served a brief prison term last year for refusing to pay a fine for breaching the peace.

Strathclyde police said the arrests were for public order offences including breach of the peace and resisting arrest.

Scottish CND administrator John Ainslie said: "This is the biggest protest in Scotland since 1961 and it is the biggest ever held at Faslane".

On being arrested Sheridan called for further action: "The world is against nuclear weapons and today proves that the time for talking is over and demonstrations throughout the world should start against nuclear weapons," the socialist MSP said.

The protest was given a boost on Sunday when Sean Connery sent a message of support to the campaigners.
