Petrol tax protestors across Wales and England have called for public support as they prepare to launch the first of their "public awareness days" on February 24.

Organisers say they will be "taking peaceful and legal convoys to certain towns and areas across Britain" in an attempt to raise public awareness of the fuel tax issue and maintain pressure on the government to reduce fuel taxes.

In Wales, one convoy plans to visit Carmarthen before travelling on to Swansea. Another group aims to launch its protest at the Wales Office in Cardiff.

Carlisle, Workington and Whitehaven are among the places where protestors hope to have an impact in England.

Shirley Jones, a spokeswoman for the protestors, told ePolitix that she was expecting "a good few hundred people" to take part and added that interest had "snowballed" as members of the public requested information.

She said that campaigners still hoped to achieve "cuts across the board" in fuel tax. Although traffic was likely to be effected by the protests, "we don't want to inconvenience people" she said. The events are about "reminding people of the amount of tax they pay."

Further events are scheduled for March 3, just days before Gordon Brown unveils his Budget on March 7.
