The number of jobless has fallen by less than expected, data published on Wednesday has shown.

The number out of of work fell by just 2,600 in December, bringing the jobless total down to 1,041,700.

Figures released on Tuesday showed that average earnings are increasing by 4.4 per cent - an above inflation increase which could restrict any downward movement in interest rates.
