MP criticised for Martin wager
Labour MP Frank Roy has been censured by the Commons committee on standards and privileges for betting on the outcome of the Speaker election.
The Motherwell and Wishaw MP won £4,000 after betting £200 that Michael Martin would succeed Betty Boothroyd with at odds of 20-1.
The committee backed parliamentary commissioner Elizabeth Filkin to uphold a complaint by a member of the public. It advised no further action to be taken but reprimanded Roy in a strongly-worded statement. "Betting by Members on the outcome of any parliamentary business brings discredit on the House."
