A new book claims that John Major urged Chris Patten to return to Westminster to seize the Tory crown from William Hague. According to the "Journals of Woodrow Wyatt" the former Conservative prime minister was concerned at the "dreadful, overdone, right-wing stuff" pursued by William Hague. A spokesman for Major said the account had been misconstrued, saying he had simply wanted Patten back in the Commons, not installed as party leader.
