Government slipping on environment objectives
The government has revealed that it is achieving mixed results in achieving its environmental objectives.
Michael Meacher unveiled the second annual report "Greening Government" at the Sustainability in Public Services conference in London on Tuesday. He will highlight the progress that the government has made but will admit there are serious problems that have yet to be addressed.
A spokesman for DETR told epxNews: "The government has improved a lot in the resources it uses but it is doing not so well in some areas."
John Horam, chairman of the Environmental Audit Committee, who was also at Tuesday's conference, said: "The issue is very much back on the agenda and the recent floods have focused minds. Clearly the environment is the Cinderella of government policies. We need a co-ordinated approach to policy across the government departments but the issue isn't given priority."
Horam said: "I've been impressed by the stand taken by John Prescott and Michael Meacher at the international level but the committee has yet to see evidence of real commitment from the government. Every policy change should be appraised for its environmental effects. So far only the DETR have been carrying out proper analysis. There have been four claims of analysis but closer examination has found it was done in a 'post hoc' way. The analysis is essential: the environmental concerns need to be considered alongside the social and economic issues."
