In closely fought debates at the Town Hall last night, students clashed over whether money was ruining sport. The Luckley Oakfield Team of Sarah Jones and Isobel Seddon emerged triumphant with the Maiden Erlegh team of Vitor De Magalhaes and Samuel Kennedy.
The judges said it was very close and complimented the Holt team Katrina Morgan and Natalie Ogilvie and the St Crispin's Team of Hannah Blyth and Samuel Sherwood for making the winning teams work so hard for their victories.
In the debate some thought Premier footballers were paid too much and there were too many foreign players in the English League. Others thought the footballers earned their money through hard work and for their entertainment value. Some thought multi-national companies were taking over the Olympics whilst others welcomed all the money the games brought into sport.
The Rt Hon John Redwood MP was Speaker for the evening and he said afterwards: "It was most enjoyable chairing the Semi Finals which were conducted in a very competitive but friendly spirit. Students also made 10 contributions from the Floor as they sought to test out the arguments of the main protagonists. I congratulate all the participants and their teachers. I am also very grateful to our sponsors and judges who give their time and backing generously to make the event possible."
Sponsors of the event were 3M, Bill Clark, Classicstone Properties, Clifton Ingram, Raphael Vive & Co, The Royal Bank of Scotland. The judges were Bill Clark, Donald MacDonald and Rosh Vive. The Chairman of Wokingham District Council, Cllr Iain Brown attended together with Cllrs, Malcom Bryant and John Green.
The two winning teams will meet each other in the final at the Town Hall on Thursday November 10th at 7pm to debate the motion: This House believes celebrities make bad role models.
All are welcome to come to hear what should be a thrilling conclusion to the competition. Tickets are available free from Christine Hill on 0118 962 9501. Light refreshments will be served from 6.30pm
