Charity backs DWP welfare to work plans
10 October 2005
CAMPAIGNING national charity Shaw Trust has welcomed David Blunkett's eight principles of welfare reform as a major step forward towards a fairer society. But the UK's leading provider of employment services for disabled and disadvantaged people warns that fine words are not enough.
"We welcome the statement of principles and we are looking forward to helping the government to develop its full Incapacity benefit Reform Bill," said Ian Charlesworth, MD of Shaw Trust, which helped over 40,700 people last year alone.
"But the government will need to make a substantial investment and redraw current policy guidelines if it is to free up voluntary and private sector experts to effectively deliver our common aims: to empower people who are able to make the break from welfare to work.
"We agree that work is the best route out of welfare and have campaigned for some time to remove the barriers that stop people working.
"There are 1.2 million people on disability benefits who want to work right now. All they need is the right support. We look forward to working with Mr Blunkett to help make that happen."
