The Role of the NIA

NIA was established in the early 1960’s. It is the trade association and information and representative body for the British civil nuclear industry. It represents over 100 companies including the operators of the nuclear power stations, those engaged in decommissioning, waste management, nuclear liabilities management and all aspects of the nuclear fuel cycle, nuclear equipment suppliers, engineering and construction firms; nuclear research organisations; and legal, financial and consultancy companies.

NIA’s role is to:

  • provide information,
  • act as a representative body and
  • provide a forum for contact and discussion for our member companies.

Our main objectives are:

  • to influence the climate of public and political opinion in favour of nuclear energy as part of a sustainable balanced energy policy, and
  • to promote the commercial performance of the UK nuclear industry by assisting and supporting member companies to develop their businesses in the UK and internationally.

NIA seeks to promote the skills of the nuclear industry and represent its member companies by:

  • providing a central point of contact for information on nuclear energy and the British nuclear industry;
  • representing the industry’s positions on public policy and media issues
  • holding technical conferences, seminars and workshops;
  • organising inward and outward missions;
  • acting as the ‘umbrella’ for members’ participation in international events and exhibitions;
  • publishing a regular newsletter;
  • consulting with the Department of Trade and Industry and other organisations dealing with the Nuclear Industry Association
  • providing information on overseas markets
