About EMF

The Ethnic Minority Foundation (EMF) is a national registered charity that works to ensure minority ethnic communities and disadvantaged groups are able to play a full and active role in British society.  In recognition to existing barriers to participation, the Foundation undertakes ground-breaking projects aimed at increasing our understanding of these obstacles as well as finding practical solutions.  Since 1999, EMF has worked tirelessly to bring those living at the margins of society into the mainstream.

Our Vision - Living with Difference

EMF’s vision is of a diverse, tolerant and equitable British society where we can all live with difference, while sharing common values.  In order to achieve this vision, EMF is leading a new social movement aimed at eradicating poverty, injustice and prejudice wherever it exists and promoting instead prosperity, fairness and understanding.  The Foundation’s vision translates into a wide range of innovative activities and programmes, including:
  • Producing evidence-based research and publications
  • Influencing government policy and campaigning on equality and diversity issues
  • Providing a voice for the minority ethnic sector and nurturing community leadership
  • Fostering active citizenship and widening participation through volunteering
  • Building the capacity and sustainability of the minority ethnic voluntary sector
  • Acquiring buildings to provide local communities with shared working and meeting spaces
Policy and Research: EMF’s wide-ranging policy and research work contributes to further existing knowledge of issues affecting Britain’s minority ethnic and disadvantaged communities, including evidence-based studies and publications as well as the dissemination and sharing of best practice - through conferences, seminars and forums.

Campaigns and Volunteering: over the years, our many high-profile national campaigns (Sickle Cell and Thalassemia’, Save a Life’,  Energy Savers and Get Started) have raised awareness of an array of persisting social problems.  In addition, our volunteering scheme has afforded under-represented individuals the opportunity to become active citizens through their involvement in policy and decision-making processes.

Community Assets: EMF’s pioneering Community Assets programme has seen the Foundation acquiring buildings to provide local social enterprises and grass-roots organisations with shared spaces where they can meet, work together and exchange ideas.

Media and Press Coverage: our work regularly features in the national press and media, including our Press Releases as well as the wider Media and Press Coverage we receive.
