English Heritage is the Government's adviser on all aspects of the built heritage in England. It was established as The Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission for England by the National Heritage Act 1983 and began work in April of the following year.

We are sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, which has overall responsibility for heritage policy in England. We also work closely with the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister on planning, housing, urban policy and regional and local government. Other departments we work with are the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs on the environment, sustainable agriculture and rural affairs and the Department for Trade and Industry on construction issues and competition policy.

On 1 April 1999, English Heritage merged with the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England (RCHME) to become the lead body in the heritage sector. The main duties of the RCHME, are to survey historic buildings and archaeological sites. This record is available to the public through the National Monuments Record based in Swindon.
