DRC comment on the launch of the Office for Disability Issues
1 December 2005
Commenting on today’s launch of the Office for Disability Issues, Bob Niven, Chief Executive of the Disability Rights Commission said:
“Disabled people want to be involved in designing the policies that affect them and not merely at the receiving end of policies designed by others. That is the strong message we are getting from the discussions we are having through our national disability debate. Disabled people want to contribute and participate on equal terms and as equal citizens. On this basis, the DRC supports the Office of Disability Issues in its work across Government to put in place the policies needed for disabled people to live independently, to reduce disabled people’s fear of enforced institutionalisation and to enable their involvement in all aspects of society.”
