Retailing is one of the most successful, vibrant, and exciting sectors of the UK economy.
Members of the British Retail Consortium come from the whole spectrum of retailing, including large multiples, department stores, and independent shops. Our membership represents every sector of retailing, from food and drink, to furniture and DIY; selling products through centre of town, out of town, rural, and virtual stores.
Members include many trade organisations such as the British Hardware Federation, the National Federation of Newsagents, and the Association of Charity Shops. The BRC also has associate members - non-retail members with an interest in the retail sector.
The BRC is directly involved in important issues affecting retailing and the consumer, including:
- the choice and value British consumers have on the high street
- working practices and employment legislation
- crime
- the environment
- European legislation
- E-commerce and the transition from sterling to the euro, if and when it happens
It lobbies opinions on these, and many other issues.
The BRC's views are respected and its opinions influential; its surveys are recognised by the Treasury, the Bank of England, the City, and the media as key indicators for the economy. This, together with expert knowledge of the sector within the organisation, makes the BRC an essential reference point for those interested in the retail industry.
