"We congratulate students on their A-level achievements, which reflect all the hard work put in by them and their teachers.
"Annual bemoaning of the loss of gold-standard A-levels, and questions about whether the exams are getting easier, are futile – they are the wrong questions.
"The questions we should concentrate on are what skills young people need to fit them for life and work in the 21st century.
"ATL urges the government to finally end the artificial divisions between academic and vocational subjects and have one exam system which embraces both.
"We also call on the government to heed the mounting calls to overhaul the National Curriculum and give teachers more freedom to make it more relevant and responsive to the needs and interests of their students."
