Forum Brief: Baccalaureate qualifications

The CBI has warned ministers against introducing baccalaureate-style qualifications for schools.

Forum Response: Association of Teachers and Lecturers.

Elseta Elsheikh, ATL's 14-19 education adviser told ePolitix.com: "ATL believes in an inclusive education system, that enables pupils of all levels to reach their full potential. We feel that the International Baccalaureate (IB) isn't appropriate, as it is only for the most able pupils.

"Additionally we don't think it is fair to have a system where pupils do not gain a qualification if they don't earn enough points, which is the case of students who study the IB"

Forum Response: Professional Association of Teachers.

PAT general secretary, Jean Gemmell told ePolitix.com: "The debate on the future of post-16 qualifications must be considered and measured and all the options pursued. Schools, students, parents and employers need time to consolidate. We shouldn't close the door on change, but to have a massive shake-up now so soon after a huge amount of change to the system - albeit one with flaws - wouldn't be to the advantage of students, teachers or potential employers. All the partners in education need to be able to learn from the mistakes of the past and improve the system for the future.

"PAT has been following with interest the baccalaureate approach being piloted in Wales. Some students benefit from the broader baccalaureate approach, while others are more suited to the greater specialisation afforded by A Levels."
