Forum Brief: Retail crime

David Blunkett is to join the London launch of the first National Respect for Shopworkers Day on Wednesday September 17.

The home secretary said: "It is unacceptable that thousands of shopworkers are assaulted every year. Any initiative which aims to improve the safety of retail staff and the shopping public is worthy of the government's support.

"The retail sector has a critical role in the UK's economy, employing around 2.7 million people and generating billions of pounds worth of business.

"Its success and the safety of its workforce go hand in hand."

Forum Response: Usdaw

John Hannett, deputy general secretary of Usdaw, said: "This is a great boost for our campaign. We want to work with the government, employers, local authorities and the police to improve safety in the stores."

Forum Response: British Retail Consortium

Bill Moyes, director general of the BRC, told ePolitix.com: "The BRC's retail crime survey has highlighted the link between drugs/drink and violence. This must be tackled as a social problem impacting on the community as a whole.

"As a sector employing almost three million people, the retail industry is committed to protecting and supporting shopworkers in the work place.

"This is why that the industry and its union are united in campaigning for support to fight retail crime.

"Retailers are relieved that at last the prime minister himself has recognised the importance of threat to our communities through the increase of violence in our shops and stores.

"The BRC will be keeping the pressure on government to deal with this important issue as a key step in ensuring safer streets and safer shopping."
