The government has won its appeal against a court decision that Heathrow night flights violated the human rights of local residents.

A spokesman for British Airways said: "We are pleased with the outcome and there has been no violation of Article 8 'The right to respect for private, family life and home'.

"The European Court of Human Rights has recognised that the government has not ignored peoples' human rights and also the few flights are of great importance to the UK economy.

"British Airways tries to be a good neighbour and to minimise the adverse effects of our operations and we will continue to do so.

"We have stated in our response to the government's consultation on runway development that if a new runway is built at Heathrow, there would be no need for any flights on any new runway before 0600 and no need to increase the number of night quota flights on the existing runways."
