Forum Brief: Teen pregnancy

The minister for children, Margaret Hodge, has welcomed a report on the government's strategy on reducing teenage pregnancies.

The Independent Advisory Group on Teenage Pregnancy praised the additional £8 million investment into the schemes and the inclusion of teenage pregnancy reduction targets in health and local government performance indicators.

Forum Response: Barnardo's

Sue Dunstall, principal policy officer for Barnardo's, said: "The reduction in the number of teenage pregnancies so far is good news, but the report shows there is more that can be done to reduce the rate further.

"All children and young people, including disabled children, have a right to skilled and sensitive education on sexual health and relationships. Good sex and health education encourages young people to make informed choices in their relationships, as well as the skills and knowledge to protect themselves and their health.

"Sex and relationship education should be taught as a continuous part of the curriculum from an early age. Children and young people need accurate information which is right for their age and level of understanding. The subject should be integrated across all areas of the curriculum.

"Sex and relationship education should be included in initial teacher training and social work courses, and schools should have a dedicated member of staff responsible for this area."
