The head of Ofsted has warned that failing independent schools must improve their standards.

David Bell, chief inspector of schools in England, was expected to tell a conference in Brighton that, proportionately, far more fee-paying schools than state schools are among the worst in the country.

Gwen Evans, joint acting general secretary of ATL, said: "These moves will give parents long-needed assurances that the independent school they are choosing for their child offers more than just a smart-looking uniform.]"We share David Bell's concern about the low standards offered by some of the badly run establishments that do nothing to enhance the sector's reputation.

"While the top schools look after both pupils and staff well, we have far too many cases where ATL members have been treated appallingly. Parents would be horrified if they knew what was going on."

Jean Gemmell, general secretary of PAT, said: "We await full details of Ofsted's plans with interest, but would welcome measures to ensure that new independent schools adopt the highest possible standards."
